A Christmas Prayer

Recently, I received a newsletter from the Northumbria Community, in which the following prayer caught my eye—and heart. Written by Pete Askew, these words capture many of my desires at this time of year. I’m spending my days grading, preparing courses, and writing and rewriting—while also looking forward to spending Christmas days with family and friends. Therefore, since it may be a while until I have time to write another blog about prayer, I offer this prayer as a gift to you, in confidence that God will provide good gifts for you and yours.

When you no longer know how to be,

may the Father take you on your deeper journey.

When you no longer know what to do,

may the Spirit reveal to you your fitting task.

When all feels lost or foreign

may you know your home in Christ.

On the path that is before you,

may you have companions for the journey,

may you find Christ in the stranger,

and may you know the love and blessing of God.

P.S. I spent a few days at Northumbria Community’s mother house in 2010, and was deeply moved by the members’ extraordinary hospitality. For a number of years I also benefitted from using their daily prayer resources (whether online or in hardcopy). CDPUS-200x300
